──Learning stages
A clear path forward.
For every student.
────
At Pathway, every student is placed based on ability — not age, not school year. Our three structured stages ensure your child is always learning at the right level, with the right depth, alongside the right peers.
How do we place your child?
Every new student begins with a free diagnostic assessment conducted by our Academic Lead.
We look at conceptual understanding, reasoning ability, and learning style — not just test scores.

──Stage details
Three stages. One continuous path.
Each stage has a distinct purpose, structure, and curriculum alignment. Students advance based on demonstrated mastery, not time or age.
Stage 1
Foundations
Year 0–4 · Max 5 students · 1-hour sessions
What this stage is about
Foundations is where mathematical thinking begins. We focus on building genuine number sense, core operations, and the confidence to approach problems without anxiety. Our cyclical progressive model means concepts are revisited and deepened over time.
How it works
Small group of up to 5 students — every child is seen and heard
1-hour structured sessions with concrete-to-abstract teaching
Individual progress records updated every session
Progress tracked through ongoing teacher observation

Stage 2
Reasoning
Year 5–7 · Max 6 students · 1.5 or 2-hour sessions
What this stage is about
Reasoning is where students move from knowing procedures to understanding why they work. We develop mathematical thinking, structured problem-solving, and the ability to tackle unfamiliar questions with confidence.
How it works
5-week modules with diagnostic pre-assessment and mastery post-assessment
1.5 or 2-hour closed-loop sessions: teaching, practice, and homework in class
Written progress report at the end of every module
Students advance only when mastery is demonstrated

Stage 3
Advanced Concepts
Year 8–10 + IGCSE · Max 6 · 1.5 or 2-hour sessions
What this stage is about
Advanced Concepts prepares students for the rigour of senior mathematics and international examinations. We build the depth, independence, and analytical precision needed to excel in both NCEA and Cambridge International.
How it works
5-week modules aligned to NZ Curriculum and Cambridge International
1.5 or 2-hour closed-loop sessions with emphasis on independent problem-solving
Pre- and post-module assessments with written progress reports
Dual-pathway: NCEA or Cambridge depending on student’s school
